Full Grain leather is the best quality grade of leather, higher than Top Grain leather, which is often wrongly assumed to be the best quality leather.
The difference between Full Grain and Top Grain leather is important.
Here are 3 main characteristics of Full Grain leather:
- FULL GRAIN LEATHER COMES FROM THE TOP LAYER OF THE HIDE.
The top layer of the hide includes all of the natural grain. Full Grain leather is expensive for manufacturers to buy and more difficult to work with. It is stronger and more beautiful – but not as uniform.
- EACH INDIVIDUAL SURFACE OF FULL GRAIN LEATHER IS UNIQUE.
Natural imperfections, scratches, wounds, brands… this has been a living, breathing unique animal and the hide is every bit as unique and beautiful as the animal. Full grain leather is tough, the fibres are the closest and most durable there.
Full grain leather ages gracefully and develops the highly prized ‘patina’ – the unique ageing marks and characteristics of a truly natural and beautiful product.
Full grain leather is the best – and is not to be confused with Top Grain. That is a subject for another post, but Top Grain has some of the top grain removed….
